Blackout is the latest children’s book in the Jimmy Coates thriller series by author Joe Craig. I met Joe Craig at a Night of Adventure and he gave me a copy to review and wished me a whirlwind of adventure.
If I told you what was in this book, or what I thought of it, I’d have to kill you. Am I only kidding? I can’t tell you but if you are brave enough to risk your life and read on then here’s what I thought…
Who is Jimmy?
Jimmy Coates is a genetically designed assassin created by the government. He lives by killing people. That’s what he was made to do. But don’t be scared. He won’t come for you. Although perhaps I would check under your bed tonight just in case.
Why does Jimmy kill people?
Jimmy doesn’t just kill people for any reason. He assassinates them to save his family and friends. Well wouldn’t you save your family and friends? Except if you have a horrible brother. Then you might think twice. And if you do have a horrible brother I would check under the bed for him as well.
Anyway, Jimmy is the good guy. And he has a brother too. Well kind of. In fact it’s not really a brother; it’s a clone of his DNA. Are you keeping up with me?
There’s a lot of people who are bad in this book so Jimmy is a busy guy. The people that created him are out to get him. And many others are too. To tell you who would be to spoil the plot. And then I’d have to kill you. No, not really. I just like saying that!
What did I like about this Jimmy Coates Blackout?
I liked the two parallel story lines. One person is trying to help Jimmy while at the same time he’s trying to help others. The plot is fast and tense and I couldn’t put this book down. In fact if it had self destructed in a day I would have got to the end. I loved random Felix and his irrelevant questions and comments. My advice Felix…the tie really doesn’t matter. This is by far the best book I have ever read.
Who should read this book?
I would say 9-14 year olds (both boys and girls) will enjoy this crazy world. If you buy this book your brother or sister will probably want to steal it. But my brother isn’t getting his hands on my copy. Because I have locked it in a vault surrounded by electrical charge and pink fairy dust. No boy would ever want to venture into there.
